Grams to Cups Converter (by Ingredient)
Cups measure volume and grams measure weight, so the answer depends on the ingredient. Pick one below: 1 US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g, granulated sugar is 198 g, butter is 227 g.
Every result shows the cup size used and the published source line behind the weight. Choose metric cup for recipes from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Africa.
How to use the grams to cups converter
- Search for the ingredient or pick it from the list. Aliases work, so “icing sugar”, “bicarb” and “plain flour” find the right entry.
- Type the amount. Fractions such as
1 1/2and¾are fine. - Choose what you have in From and what you need in To. Weight units are g, kg, oz and lb; volume units are US, metric and UK cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, ml and fluid ounces.
- Read the answer, the practical measuring-cup version, and the source line. The link in your address bar always holds your current setup, so you can send it to someone.
The tool covers 67 ingredients across flours, sugars, fats, dairy, grains, nuts and leaveners. It needs an ingredient only when you cross between weight and volume; ounces to grams or cups to milliliters work for anything.

Why a cup of flour and a cup of sugar do not weigh the same
A cup measures space, not mass. How much a cup weighs depends on how tightly the ingredient packs. A US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar is 198 g, and a cup of honey is 339 g, about 2.8 times the weight of the flour. Water sits at 237 g. That is why one universal “cups to grams” number does not exist, and why this converter asks for the ingredient first.
Technique matters as much as density. The flour figure above assumes the spoon-and-level method: fluff the flour, spoon it into the cup, sweep the top flat. Dip the cup into the bag and you can pack in 140 g or more, which makes cakes dry and cookies cakey. Brown sugar is the opposite: it is measured packed, and the 213 g figure assumes you pressed it into the cup. Powdered sugar is 113 g per cup unsifted, and sifting makes it lighter. When a recipe gives grams, use them and skip the cup altogether.
US cup, metric cup and UK cup
The word “cup” covers three sizes. The converter labels which one it is using and lets you switch.
The metric cup is 5.7% larger than the US cup. For flour that is 6.8 g per cup, enough to turn a tender cake into a dense one if you swap cups without converting. For a deeper look, see cups to ml.
Worked example: 100 g of sugar in cups
- Granulated sugar is 198 g per US cup (Sugar (granulated white): 1 cup = 198 g).
- Divide: 100 g ÷ 198 g = 0.505 cup.
- In kitchen terms that is about ½ cup.
Run the same 100 g through flour and you get 0.833 cup (¾ cup + 1 tbsp + 1 tsp). Same weight, different volume.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of flour?
One US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g (King Arthur Baking, spooned and levelled). Whole wheat flour is 113 g and almond flour is 96 g per cup.
How many cups is 100 grams of sugar?
100 g of granulated sugar is 0.505 US cup, which is about ½ cup.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. A US cup is 236.6 ml and a metric cup is 250 ml, a difference of 5.7%. Choose the cup that matches the country the recipe comes from.
Why do other sites give different gram figures?
Weights depend on how the cup is filled. This site uses published figures and shows each source line, such as “All-Purpose Flour: 1 cup = 120 g”. Scooping flour from the bag gives a heavier cup than spooning it in.
Does it work for liquids like milk and oil?
Yes. A US cup of milk is 244 g and a cup of vegetable oil is 218 g. For liquids you can also measure in ml, which is more precise than a cup.

No. Every conversion runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the site sets no cookies.
